In September 2024, the Eco Umande, a green methanol-powered ship, made its inaugural port visit to Klaipėda, Lithuania. This marks a significant milestone in the global shift towards sustainable shipping. The Eco Umande is part of a broader initiative to decarbonise the maritime industry by adopting cleaner fuels like green methanol, which emits significantly lower levels of carbon dioxide compared to traditional fossil fuels.
The ship operates on a route that includes major European ports like Rotterdam, Antwerp, Klaipėda, and Riga. With a capacity of 1,260 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), the Eco Umande is part of a fleet servicing a regular schedule, visiting Klaipėda every two weeks. This initiative aligns with a broader push by European ports, including Klaipėda, to support green shipping corridors and promote the use of eco-friendly vessels.
Green methanol, which can be produced from renewable resources such as biomass or captured carbon dioxide, is seen as a promising alternative to conventional marine fuels. It helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter, offering a cleaner solution for global shipping.
This visit to Lithuania is part of a concerted effort by multiple European ports to lead in sustainable shipping and reduce the environmental impact of maritime operations, particularly in the heavily trafficked Baltic and North Sea regions.
